Nightmares are frighteningly common in the U.S. According to recent data from SleepEducation.org, at least 50 percent of adults say they experience a few nightmares every month.
Unfortunately, for patients who struggle with these dreadful dreams, there’s no standardized solution. Doctors still don’t fully understand what causes nightmares, but many believe it could be a combination of factors, including heightened stress levels, medication interactions, and poor sleeping patterns.
Although nightmares remain an enigma for scientists, there’s more evidence that CBD might help. While CBD isn’t a cure-all, new data suggests it could play a role in managing frequent nightmares. Let’s take a look at what recent research has to say about CBD’s soothing qualities.
Could CBD Quell Night Terrors? New Data Looks Promising
The University of Colorado Denver recently released one of the most exciting studies examining CBD’s effectiveness on nightmares. Researchers involved in this trial gave CBD pills to a group of PTSD patients, many of whom suffered from night terrors. Within eight weeks, 91 percent of patients said they noticed a significant reduction in symptoms.
We should note that all of these PTSD patients were regularly seeing a psychiatrist throughout this trial. While CBD may be a useful adjunct therapy, it is no replacement for professional mental health counseling.
This new trial builds on previous studies out of CU Denver examining CBD’s sedative potential. For instance, a 2019 study from the same university examined how well CBD affected anxiety patients’ sleep quality. After one month, roughly 60 percent of patients said they were sleeping better than before the trial.
