When you think of memory supplements, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Chances are you’re thinking of something like ginkgo biloba, green tea extract, or omega-3 fatty acids. But what about CBD?
Although we often associate CBD with arthritis or anxiety, there’s growing evidence it might play a role in the future management of memory disorders, such as Alzheimer’s. Don’t believe us? Well then, you’ve got to check out the latest research out of the UK.
Mind-Blowing UCL Trial Examines CBD & Brain Health
Recently, neuroscientists at University College London published a fascinating study examining the effects of CBD on brain function. Specifically, UCL researchers were interested in how CBD might improve the symptoms of memory disorders like dementia.
For this trial, researchers gave CBD capsules or placebo pills to 15 young volunteers. Scientists then scanned each study participant’s brain using a highly-advanced MRI machine.
According to the trial results, CBD seemed to enhance blood flow to a significant brain region: the hippocampus. Situated in the primitive limbic system, the hippocampus is closely associated with short- and long-term memory. Many doctors now believe that abnormal hippocampus signaling is one of the earliest warning signs of Alzheimer’s.
While UCL’s data is encouraging, keep in mind that this study only involved a small research pool with healthy trial participants. Hopefully, as more professors read papers like these, they will be encouraged to organize more extensive studies to examine CBD’s effects on the brain.
UCL Study Adds To Research On CBD And Psychosis
In addition to diseases like Alzheimer’s, UCL professors argued their findings could impact how we think about treating various psychological disorders that affect memory. For instance, study authors suggested CBD might be able to assist patients struggling with schizophrenia or PTSD.
Interestingly, there have already been a few trials examining CBD’s potential on these two disorders. For instance, one study out of King’s College London suggested CBD might reduce psychotic episodes in schizophrenia patients. There is also data out of the University of Colorado that suggests CBD capsules could reduce the frequency of night terrors in PTSD patients.
As scientists better understand CBD’s effect on brain function, hopefully we will gain a clearer understanding of how this cannabinoid affects cognitive health.
Movement, Meditation And Memory – Tips On Getting The Most Out Of Your CBD
At Chil Wellness, we always encourage people to use CBD to support other healthy lifestyle habits. Although CBD shows phenomenal potential on its own, it’s not the only way to boost brain health. For instance, many studies that suggest people who exercise regularly have a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s. It also appears that daily meditation sessions have a positive impact on brain function.
