What is the Endocannabinoid System?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is responsible for sending and receiving signals that regulate chemicals called endocannabinoids. Produced naturally by most people, these chemicals are believed to play a role in many other bodily functions and processes, including the reproductive system, sleep, memory and appetite.

How Does It Work?

Your body has receptors for two kinds of endocannabinoids: CB1 and CB2. These receptors each target different areas: the central and peripheral nervous systems, respectively. External cannabinoids either come from plants or are synthetically produced. The two most studied cannabinoids are THC (tetrahydrocannabidinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).

THC is a psychoactive chemical found in marijuana that is responsible for making people feel “stoned” or “high.” CBD is found in hemp and other cannabis varieties and is not psychoactive. Hemp plants used for CBD products are required to have less than 0.3% THC. Full-spectrum CBD products, while lacking in THC, contain many other organic chemicals, including terpenes - compounds responsible for the smell, flavor and other characteristics of plants that produce CBD and THC.

CBD and the Endocannabinoid System

The THC found in marijuana acts in a way that is very similar to anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglyerol (2-AG), the endocannabinoids naturally produced by your body and processed by both the CB1 and CB2 receptors mentioned above. CBD, however, is treated differently by your body.

CBD doesn’t get broken down like THC or organic endocannabinoids. CBD attaches to CB1 and CB2 receptors and is believed to last longer before getting broken down. This potentially allows for the positive effects of CBD to last longer and provide more benefits.

CBD Products

CBD is available in many forms for consumption and topical use. Many products begin by extracting CBD oil from the hemp plant. This full-spectrum oil is then mixed with a carrier oil and processed into pills, lotions, tinctures and other items.

Pills can be beneficial when a patient needs a steady, time-released dose of CBD. For a long-lasting, deep sleep, you can start by using our Deep Sleep Capsules. The special mix of melatonin, chamomile, and valerian root allows you to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Lotions and salves are believed to help with the relief of joint and muscle pain. Our Maximum Relief Salve uses a high-quality CBD to provide therapeutic relief to painful areas on your body.

Tinctures contain CBD oil and other ingredients and have the potential to help people who are suffering from insomnia, anxiety, or just want a relaxing way to start their day. The delicious peppermint taste of our Mellow Mint Tincture also allows it to be easily consumed.

It’s important to remember that CBD won’t get you “high,” but still does have many benefits. With the wide variety of CBD products currently available, it’s easy to find the right one for you. Just make sure they’ve been analyzed and certified by a third-party lab before consuming or applying your product.
